Working Principle

• Electromagnetic Signal-Based Positioning Technology: Lightning discharges radiate broadband electromagnetic pulses. The locator calculates the lightning position by analyzing the time difference, direction angle, or phase difference of these signals. Methods include time-of-arrival (TOA) positioning, direction-finding (DF), and radio frequency interferometry.
• Optical Signal-Based Positioning Technology: The lightning illumination process can be captured by optical devices, and positioning is achieved through image processing. For example, high-speed cameras capture the lightning illumination area, and multi-site image matching calculates the three-dimensional coordinates of the lightning. Alternatively, spectrometers analyze the characteristic spectral lines of lightning illumination to deduce discharge location and energy parameters.
• Electric Field Change-Based Positioning Technology: Lightning discharges cause drastic changes in the local electric field, and measuring the electric field gradient can assist in positioning. For instance, dipole antennas measure transient electric field changes caused by lightning, and signal polarity is used to determine the polarity of cloud-to-ground flashes.
